The Atkins Public School has three media centers located at the elementary school, middle school, and high school campuses. The media centers provide print collections and electronic databases designed to meet the needs of students and faculty. They are staffed and accessible throughout the school day. Students and faculty may access the electronic card catalog using the computers available in the media centers to browse for material needed in research, classroom preparation, or just leisure reading. The media centers are equipped with the Spectrum Circulation/Catalog Software to provide the online card catalog for the patrons. The Accelerated Reader Program is a computer-based reading motivation program that is utilized in the libraries. Students are tested at the beginning of the year using STAR software, to determine their zone of proximal difficulty (ZPD). This helps the teacher know what reading level zone each student should be reading on to help develop his or her reading ability. The students earn points and may spend them in the libraries to purchase items in the point joint stores.
